About the event
International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on March 8th and is a global day recognizing the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also serves as a call to action for accelerating gender parity and addressing issues that women face worldwide.
Historical Background
International Women's Day has roots in the early 20th century labor and suffrage movements. The first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909, organized by the Socialist Party of America in honor of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York.
The concept of an international day emerged during the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen, where Clara Zetkin proposed the idea. The first IWD was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland on March 19, 1911. The date was later moved to March 8 in 1913 and has been celebrated on this date ever since.
